Mind Stretchers: Norman Rockwell & Religious Iconography

Date: Tuesday, January 16, 2018
Time: 6:00pm to 8:00pm
Location: St. John's Episcopal Church 215 N 6th St, Fort Smith, AR

Speakers: Stewart Dippel PhD & the Rev. Jeffery Champlin

Norman Rockwell remains enormously popular, as shown by the recent exhibit at Crystal Bridges. Stewart explores the religious dimensions of Rockwell's art. Rosie the Riveter evokes both Michelangelo's Isaiah and the Book of Isaiah. Dippel writes, "Much of Rockwell's work reflects a prophet's concern for the least, the last, and the lost." Champlin reflects on the importance of the religious imagination. "Iconographic theology" (Dippel's term) looks first to the imaginative expression of faith in Scripture, worship, art, and literature.
