Carlos Luna Exhibit

Date: Friday, June 2, 2017 to Tuesday, September 19, 2017
Time: All Day to 12:00am
Location: Fort Smith Regional Art Museum 1601 Rogers Ave Fort Smith, 7290

Carlos Luna is a contemporary Cuban-American painter, sculptor, printmaker, and ceramicist. Duality is a common theme in Cuban art, and Luna’s art embodies the internal struggles of an artist who has been uprooted. His art references the artistic traditions of the Cuban Havana School influenced by Wifredo Lam, the European Cubist paintings of French artist Fernand Léger, the storytelling of Mexican muralism and even the horror vacui of the Latin American baroque. This exhibition will feature over 50 works of this prolific artist, that include mixed media on wood, large-scale tapestries, and works on paper. General admission is always free. Opening reception is Thursday, June 1, 5-7PM, free for members, $5 for non-members.

FSPL Presents - The Vietnam War: A Film by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick

Date: Tuesday, September 12, 2017
Time: 6:00pm to 8:30pm
Location: Fort Smith Public Library 3201 Rogers Avenue Fort Smith, Arkansa

Join the Fort Smith Public Library for an early special screening of The Vietnam War, a decade-long undertaking from filmmakers Ken Burns and Lynn Novick. The presentation will highlight portions of the ten-part, 18-hour documentary series premiering on PBS, Sunday Sept 17. The series tells the epic story of one of the most consequential, divisive, and controversial events in American history as it has never before been told on film. Visceral and immersive, the series explores the human dimensions of the war through revelatory testimony of nearly 80 witnesses from all sides—Americans who fought in the war and others who opposed it, as well as combatants and civilians from North and South Vietnam. The event will also feature a panel of community members discussing their own experiences and expertise with the war. This event is free and open to all.
