Carlos Luna Exhibit

Carlos Luna is a contemporary Cuban-American painter, sculptor, printmaker, and ceramicist. Duality is a common theme in Cuban art, and Luna’s art embodies the internal struggles of an artist who has been uprooted. His art references the artistic traditions of the Cuban Havana School influenced by Wifredo Lam, the European Cubist paintings of French artist Fernand Léger, the storytelling of Mexican muralism and even the horror vacui of the Latin American baroque. This exhibition will feature over 50 works of this prolific artist, that include mixed media on wood, large-scale tapestries, and works on paper. General admission is always free. Opening reception is Thursday, June 1, 5-7PM, free for members, $5 for non-members.

Katie Harper Exhibit

For the past 25 years, Harper’s commercial graphic design work has informed her fine art, and vice versa. This retrospective exhibition will explore the ways that design concepts and production methods, both old and new, influence fine art, especially with regard to technique. It will include explorations into photography and printmaking, as well as award-winning letterpress and book arts.

General admission is always free. Opening reception is Thursday, June 1, 5-7PM, free for members, $5 for non-members.

Sparks Kids Triathlon

Sparks Kids Triathlon is for youth 14 years and under who like to swim, bike and run. The event will begin at the Marvin Altman Fitness Center pool, with the Bike & Run course on Lexington Avenue. (which will be closed for event safety) The event will benefit The Gregory Kistler Center. On line registration only this year. Hunter Education Course

Student Exhibition

The Fort Smith Museum of History and the United States Marshals Museum are partnering to offer a summer program for Fort Smith junior and senior high school students. The students meet weekly, conduct research into the Belle Grove and Fishback neighborhoods and the Chaffee Historic District, then design an exhibit utilizing art, writing, photography, etc. of the students' choice. The project will conclude with a student designed exhibit opening at the Fort Smith Museum of history on August 26, 2017, 10:00 am-12:00 noon. The students' exhibit will remain in place through the fall. The project began June 6 with students meeting weekly to visit the neighborhoods and conduct research. Students were offered a presentation by Fort Smith architect Galen Hunter on the principles of good design. United States Marshals Museum Curator Dave Kennedy presented "Components of a Good Exhibit." Shelley Blanton with the Pebley Center at the UAFS Boreham Library offered advice on research resources. Fort Smith Museum of history Board of Trustees members Jo Ann Campbell and David Roberts guided students on the tour of the historic Fishback Neighborhood. Museum Collections Committee member David Kerr, Julie Moncrief with the Clayton House, volunteers Sue and Floyd Robison and Marcus Woodward guided student through the Belle Grove Historic District. Curator Rod Williamson conducted a tour of the Chaffee Historic District. The project will conclude with a student designed exhibition opening on Saturday, August 26 in the Boyd Gallery at the Fort Smith Museum of History. This project is supported in part by a grant from the Arkansas Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Friends of the Library Annual Used Book Sale: Mostly Non-Fiction!

The Friends of the Library used book sale is bigger and better than ever! Shop thousands of non-fiction selections for adults including hardbacks and paperbacks from your favorite authors and on your favorite topics. Most paperbacks are 25 cents and most hardback books are $1. New this year: the sale will continue Sunday with all remaining titles ½ price, then book clearance begins Monday, August 31 with remaining items priced by the bag! Proceeds from the sale are used to buy library materials and fund library special events and projects. Members of the Friends of the Fort Smith Public Library may come to the exclusive Friends-only Preview Sale on Friday, August 25, from 4-7 p.m. There will be a 25 book limit at the preview sale. Friends of the Library memberships start at $10 and will be for sale at the Preview Sale.

Flute and Drum Circle

Monthly Flute & Drum Circle at Yogaterrium. The drum and flute circle started back in 2009 from a few of the local and area enthusiasts. We meet the LAST Saturday of each month where we play the Native American Flute. We also have a session of group drumming with all kinds of drums and percussion instruments. You do not have to be a trained flute player or drummer to participate. Come with an open mind and a willingness to try something new, extra instruments are often available. Donations are requested for the use of the space. *** Only a few chairs are available, for those who need to sit down in chairs please plan to bring your own to be sure you have one available. Circle starts at 1:00 PM Come out and give the circle a listen or a try. Please list each month. This event happens the LAST SATURDAY of every month. Thank you.

Center for Art and Education 5x5 Gala

The Center for Art and Education's 8th annual 5x5 Gala will take place August 26th at the Fort Smith Convention Center. Join us for a cocktail hour and dinner. Ticket holders will receive one 5x5 work of art created by local artists. Each $100.00 ticket helps to further the Center's mission of "Promoting Artistic Experiences" to the River Valley. Guest Artists will be selling their work and creating a piece on site to be auctioned off at the end of the evening. This evening of Food and Art will be a night to remember as it supports the Center’s yearly programs.
